APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR FEE PAYING STUDENTS

 

Before you begin

 

Kootenay Lake School District will only accept complete applications using our secure online application system. Mailed, emailed, or faxed applications are no longer accepted. Incomplete or unpaid applications will not be processed.

 

Before you begin the online application process, please make sure you have collected all the necessary information and documents. You will need the applicant’s complete information and at least one parent’s complete information. This includes names, birthdates, addresses, etc. Required and recommended documents (see below) must be submitted as PDF or JPEG files only and less than 5MB each. If any document is larger than 5MB, it has been scanned at too high a resolution and must be rescanned at a lower resolution before beginning the application process.

 

The application fee for fee paying students is $350 CAD and is nonrefundable. Please have a major credit card ready for the final page of the online application system.

 

Required documents

 

We recommend that you collect the following documents prior to applying.  These must be submitted as single documents in FDF or JPEG files only and less than 5MB each.

 

 

In order to submit an application, the two documents listed below are required. If you do not upload these documents into the online application system, you cannot complete the application process. If you do not submit a complete application within seven (7) days, the partial application will be automatically deleted.

 

  1. Transcripts or report You must have a record of grades for the last two years, translated into English, they must be in PDF or JPEG files only, and less than 5MB in size. You will only able to upload one document, so please ensure all pages of the records of grades are scanned as a single document.
  2. Legal agreements. The parent(s) of the application must sign our agreement. Before starting the application process, please download the Student Agreement, have it signed in ink, and scanned as a PDF or JPEG file only.
  3. Passport photo page. Please scan the passport photo page of the applicant’s passport in colour, if they have a passport already. This allows us to double-check the applicant’s information to ensure that all correspondence is correct.
  4. Letter of Recommendation. Please have a teacher, school counselor, or Headmaster/Principal write a letter of recommendation for the This letter should be on school letterhead and identify the student and their strong points. If this letter is longer than one page, make sure you scan all pages as a single document.
  5. Student’s letter of intent. This letter is written by the student explaining their desire to come to Canada and study in Kootenay Lake School District. It should outline their past studies, their interests and hobbies, and their future goals. If this letter is longer than one page, make sure you scan all pages as a single document.
  6. Immunization records: Please scan as a single document all immunization records relevant to the student’s medical history. If this letter is longer than one page, make sure you scan all pages as a single document.
  7. Custodian document:  If the applicant will not be part of our homestay program, or if their choose not to use our free custodianship service, they must assign a custodian. This custodian must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, over 25 years old, and must live full time in the Kootenay Lake School District area.

Other documents (not required)

 

  1. Photo album. Some students compile a photo album for our homestay placement process. Please scan the entire album as one document.
  2. Other documents. If you have another document pertinent to admission, such as a student interview form, please submit it as a single document

 

 


 

APPLICATOIN INSTRUCTIONS FOR MINISTRY FUNDED STUDENTS

 

***There is no application fee for funded students.

 

This document contains important information. If needed, please have it translated.

 

Types of student who may qualify for funding:

 A student who is in British Columbia (BC) with his or her parent (also legal guardian, hereafter listed as ‘parent’) might be eligible for a publicly-funded education if the parent meets criteria set out by the provincial government. Kootenay Lake Schools uses these criteria to establish their minimum qualifications for enrolment as a fundable student.

 Language in this section has been adapted and augmented from the Eligibility of Students for Operating Grant Funding, written by the Ministry of Education. The parent must provide official and original documentation to prove they are eligible under one of the four categories below:

 

Work Permit: A parent has been lawfully admitted to Canada for temporary residence and is authorized to work for a period of one year or more. (Work Permits that expire in less than one year will not be accepted)

 

Study Permit: A parent has been lawfully admitted to Canada and is authorized to study for a period of one year or more (Study Permits that expire in less than one year will not be accepted) and one of the following applies:

The parent is enrolled in a degree or diploma program at a public post-secondary institution in British

The parent is enrolled in a degree program at an EQA approved private post-secondary institution in British Columbia.

 

Diplomat: The parent is carrying out official duties as an accredited diplomatic agent, preclearance officer, consular officer or official representative in Canada of a foreign government with a consular post in British Columbia or under the authority of the Visiting Forces Act.

 

Refuge: A student who resides in British Columbia and who has made a claim for refugee status in Canada and whose claim has not yet been determined or who is detained in custody in a youth custody
